He studied painting privately with Albert Gröhn, simultaneously studying at the Zeichenschule der Maler- und Lackierer-Innung zu Danzig, and later at the Royal School of Fine Arts and Decorative Arts with Wilhelm August Stryowski, from whom he also took private lessons. From November 1888 to the winter semester of 1892, he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, including with Otto Brausewetter. He completed his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris (1893), Frankfurt (1893–1895), and Dresden (1896–1898). He went on an artistic journey to Switzerland (Geneva) and France (Cannes). After returning to Gdańsk, he taught art from 1898 until his retirement in 1934. He painted street scenes of Gdańsk and views of the port of Gdańsk.
