Józef Kowner (Kiev 1895 - 1967 Kalmar) – Russian-Swedish painter with Jewish origin. Kowner began his artistic studies in 1912, and he stopped them after a year. In 1917 he went to Düsseldorf, where he studied for a year. Then he stayed in Paris for a year, and in 1919 he returned to Łódź. He exhibited his works from 1928. After the outbreak of World War II, he was in the Łódź ghetto, where he created watercolors depicting life and work in the ghetto. In 1944 he was transported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau . After the liberation he was transported to Sweden, where he started working as a painting teacher. He has exhibited his works at individual exhibitions in Kalmar, Oskarshamn, at the Louis Hahnes art gallery and the contemporary art gallery in Stockholm, and at many group exhibitions.
