Daniel Saint (Saint- Lô 1778-1847 Saint- Lô) is considered one of the greatest French miniaturist nineteenth century. He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault (School of David) and Augustine and Aubry. He made many portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon, Queen Hortense), sovereign of the Restoration (Prince Eugene) and the July Monarchy (Charles X). He returned to Saint Lô in 1842. The Museum of Fine Arts in the city has a few copies of his works. Deviating from the method Isabey who proceeded by the dotted line and that of Augustine who use glaze, like Aubry, he employed the hatching thus obtaining force effects in shades and relief in the model. Daniel Saint made several miniatures of Joséphine wearing court dress with tiara, necklace, and earrings including this one now at the Louvre.
