Dimitri von Prokofiev (1879-1950) was born into a noble Russian family of artists and worked as a painter at the imperial court in St. Petersburg before the First World War. After the October Revolution he fled to Germany, where he lived in Berlin until 1945. As an avid hunter Prokofiev was fascinated by the landscape of East Prussia. The oeuvre, which he created over several decades, includes mainly representations of nature and wildlife. In 1937 Prokofiev was awarded the silver medal at the International Hunting Exhibition in Berlin. During World War II his studio was destroyed, yet many of his works were saved by Lutz Heck, director of the Berlin Zoo. Today Dimitri von Prokofiev is considered one of the most important painter of hunting scenes of his time.
