This watercolor is a unique preparatory study for the 1893 print series "The Story of the Hermit and the Satyr-Boy" by Alexander Otto Stichart.

Alexander Otto Stichart (Werdau 1838 - 1896 Jöhstadt) was a German painter and illustrator. His father was a senior teacher and later a pastor in Jöhstadt, and from 1852 in Reinhardtsgrimma near Glashütte in the Eastern Ore Mountains. Stichart studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and later in Munich and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Joseph van Lerius. He worked in Christian Griepenkerl's studio in Vienna. In the early 1870s, Stichart returned to Dresden and worked as an independent artist, painting works with religious and fairy-tale themes. In 1878–1879, he undertook a study trip to Italy, spending most of his time in Rome.
