Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right. “AMaj 1941”, described in reverse “Rybaki do Mostowej”.

The watercolor shows a view of the no longer existing buildings, destroyed during World War II, with the towers of the Church of the Holy Spirit visible in the background.

Aleksander Maj (Warsaw 1883-1952 Warsaw) graphic artist, painter. From 1897 he studied drawing courses, in the years 1900-03 engraving with Józef Holewiński and Władysław Klejn and at the same time in the Warsaw Drawing Class; in the years 1904-05 he studied painting with Kazimierz Stabrowski in the studio on Zgoda Street. He practiced woodcut, oil and watercolour painting as well as polychrome, and designed posters. He also dealt with the conservation of paintings and graphics. In 1906 he exhibited in the Krywult Salon. After the war he was an extraordinary member of the ZPAP. Most of his pre-war achievements were destroyed during the war, some were burned down along with his apartment.
